Origin of the Impact – It’s not quite Natural Selection.

The pie chart below clearly shows the direction of impacts on motorcycles, shown as a percentage. It is a fact that most accidents are front end impacts and most of them come from the left. This usually means vehicles turning left in front of motorcycles effectively blocking the way forward accounts for nearly half of all accidents. This can have a detrimental effect on your day and have disastrous consequences for bike, rider and passenger. The next highest area of impact is from the front right. This could be caused by vehicles pulling out from the right in front of you. Interestingly, the chart seems to show that the chance of being side swiped while overtaking is actually quite low, but being rear-ended is higher. Vehicles pulling in front of you from the left more than from the right is an indication of bad positioning and poor use of mirrors by motorists. How many times have you had someone in your blind spot or realized you are in someone’s blind spot only when a turn signal comes on or the vehicle starts to drift your way?
